at BROOKFIELD HIGH SCHOOL
Proceeds to benefit research for Dysautonomia International in honor of BHS Senior, Emma Mangold.
This year, the We Care 5k will be donating all of its proceeds to raising awareness and furthering research for Dysautonomia International and Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS). POTS is a form of orthostatic intolerance which affects circulation. It involves the autonomic nervous system, which controls and regulates vital bodily functions, and sympathetic nervous system that activates the fight or flight response. People with POTS cannot coordinate the balancing act of blood vessel squeeze and heart rate response, meaning that their blood pressure cannot be kept steady and stable.
While about 450,000 people suffer from POTS in the US, it is not well known and research is still being done in pursuit of effective treatment. The Brookfield chapter of NHS wishes to help raise money to aid in that pursuit.
