3..2...1... ENIGMAS!
This unit allows students to study a naturally occurring enigma, an unsolved mystery, using scientific research methods. Students explore in depth an enigma and develop a hypothesis that proposes a solution to his/her chosen mystery. Students will also be able to see how different fields of science fit together and the similarities and differences between the different fields. Songs, newspaper articles, online posters, and board games are just a few of the product choices the students can create to showcase their learning. This is a Texas Performance Standards Project.
School Scrabble
Students in grades 4 - 6 also compete in School Scrabble. Scrabble is a fun and innovative way for kids to develop vocabulary, spelling, math and spatial relation skills. We hold a CSI Scrabble Qualifier every spring and advance the top 10 teams to our CSI Scrabble Championship.
Ancient Artifacts
This unit of study revolves around Egypt, more specifically “Lost Artifacts”. Each student chooses a “lost artifact” to study. There are several world artifacts which have come through the same “fate”. The students are intrigued to learn about these artifacts, find the true owner, and discover how it came to be in the possession of another country. Students present their findings by creating a digital timeline. To conclude this unit we participate in the Overnight at the Museum Field Trip though the Houston Museum of Natural Science in Houston. The students apply their knowledge of artifacts and compare the Houston Museum artifacts to the ones they have learned about. This unit includes history, social studies, reading, research skills, writing, independent thinking, and reasoning.
The students also continue learning how to build and program a LEGO EV3 robot to perform simple missions on previous seasons FIRST LEGO League mats.
