The Big Idea of Assessment for Learning
Students and teachers
Using evidence of learning
To adapt teaching and learning
To meet the immediate learning needs
Minute-to-minute and day-by-day
(Thompson & William, 2007)

Five Strategies of Assessment for Learning
  1. Clarifying and sharing learning intentions and criteria for success
  2. Engineering effective discussions, questions, and tasks that elicit evidence of learning
  3. Providing feedback that moves learners forward
  4. Activating students as the owners of their own learning
  5. Activating students as instructional resources for one another (student experts, send a spy)

Five Principles of Effective Questioning

  1. Plan questions that encourage thinking and reasoning.
  2. Ask questions in ways that include all students.
  3. Give students time to think.
  4. Avoid judging students' responses.
  5. Follow up students' responses in ways that encourage deeper thinking.
