Our Bands

Beginner Band

The beginner band program at Kerr Middle School is the foundation for the entire band program from KMS to Centennial High School! Beginner band is structured to teach each student the fundamental music skills required to be successful on their instrument. Private lessons are strongly encouraged.


During the school year, the Kerr Middle School Beginner Band has the following goals and objectives:


Beginner Band has multiple performances, including:


Concert Band

Director: Mrs. Klein

Prerequisites: One or more years of band. Also in good academic and behavioral standing. Successful audition from the previous school year.

Concert Band emphasizes the development of individual and full-band performance skills in preparation for promotion into the Symphonic Band or Honors Band. Students in Concert Band focus on developing individual fundamentals and techniques to be displayed in various performance opportunities.

Concert band participates in Mass Band Night, in addition to performing in concerts (fall, winter, & spring), and Pre-UIL. Students are required to perform a solo in the spring semester. The class is taught at an accelerated pace, and therefore private lessons are strongly encouraged

Symphonic Band

Directors: Mr. Ross / Mrs. Klein

Prerequisites: One or more years of band. Also in good academic and behavioral standing. Successful audition from the previous school year.

This intermediate-level band class emphasizes the development of full-band performance skills in preparation for concerts and UIL contest. The students continue to reinforce basic fundamentals, increase musical ability and range, and prepare students for high school band or Honors Band.

Symphonic band participates in Mass Band Night and performs in concerts (fall, winter, & spring). In addition to Pre-UIL & UIL performances, Symphonic Band may perform in a spring semester band festival. Students are encouraged to audition for the All-Region Band and are required to perform a solo in the spring semester.

Brass and woodwind players are required to attend once a week, 45-minute sectionals before or after school for a grade. Attendance at these is mandatory, graded, and is considered an extension of classroom instruction. The sectional schedule is carefully set by the directors to avoid as many conflicts as possible with other school activities. Your student will never be asked to miss a KMS game or meet for a sectional. Private lessons are strongly encouraged.

Honors Band

Directors: Mrs. Klein / Mr. Ross

Prerequisites: One or more years of band. Also in good academic and behavioral standing with the Kerr band department. Successful audition from the previous school year.

Members of this ensemble are held to the highest expectations.  This advanced-level band class emphasizes the development of individual and full-band performance skills in preparation for UIL contest. Students are expected to practice regularly each week in preparation for a variety of contests/performances and model exemplary behavior in band and school.

Honors band participates in Mass Band Night, and performs in pep rallies, elementary tour, and concerts (fall, winter, & spring).  In addition to Pre-UIL & UIL performances, Honors Band performs in a spring semester band festival. Students are expected to audition for the All-Region Band and are required to perform both a solo and small ensemble in the spring semester.
