Learning mathematics is something that EVERYONE can do and do well.

To help every member of our class to become the best possible mathematicians, we will work together in a safe, judgement-free, collaborative classroom.

Everyone will have to contribute, and

Everyone will have to work hard.

In order to best accomplish our goal of learning mathematics, I have these expectations:

+ Understanding is more important than just knowing. Our goal is to become better mathematicians by working together to explore the patterns of mathematics and then making sense of those patterns.

+ Be proud of trying ideas that don’t work when you explore the mathematics. Making mistakes, failing, and struggling allow your math mind to grow.

+ Learn your group-mates names. Math is about questioning and communicating and it is easier to communicate and question if you know your classmates’ names.

+ Everyone tries! Math is about finding patterns and making sense of them, and everyone can contribute to the search using their own creativity.

+ Help each other by asking questions and expecting thoughtful answers to improve the understanding of each person.

+ Everyone can learn deep mathematics and we will use groups and group roles to help each other become great learners.

+ Stay with your group and add to each other’s thinking. Getting done quickly is not a sign of a strong math understanding, exploring more deeply is.

+ Respect everyone's learning by showing that you know how to be a contributing member of a positive learning environment.
