This directed study course integrates on-campus methodological and theoretical learning with practical hands-on experience in a subfield of Anthropology. In conjunction with weekly class seminars, students will either work as an intern or formulate a research design with specific goals and objectives for study in their chosen field. Students have a wide variety of options for their directed study. For example, archaeology students may choose to intern at a museum, or join an archaeological excavation, or process artifacts in a lab. Some may choose to perform an analysis of archaeological collections, which can consist of artifacts, charred plant remains, or bone fragments. Cultural anthropology students may choose to do participant observation to develop an ethnography, or to conduct interviews to study a subculture. Students of physical anthropology may wish to study a primate species at a local zoo, or conduct research on forensic methods. ANTH 2389 requires a Granted Petition for Registration. Simply email me at showard@austincc.edu to request it, and I'll email back when you're able to register. This course is required for the Anthropology degree plans. Spring 2023 will be based at the Highland Campus, but may be taken online or as a combination.
