University and College Policies

The information below provides guidelines related to special circumstances you may encounter while leading a course. For information on policies that apply to all students, please refer to the course syllabus or visit the ASU Student Services Manual.

Guidelines for active duty students and Internet connectivity

Students enrolled in online courses need access to a high-speed Internet connection in order to complete coursework, and active duty members may unexpectedly lose access to that connectivity due to their service responsibilities. Administrators and faculty members are expected to accommodate students who are active duty military service members when they are unable to connect to their classroom sites due to sudden changes in their deployment, service training, or other circumstances related to active duty. Students are responsible for informing their instructors as soon as possible about any situation that may prevent them from being able to participate in course activities and/or submit assignments. When a student contacts the instructor about the inability to perform coursework due to service-related circumstances, the instructor should:

  • Provide arrangements to make up assignments, exams, or other coursework missed during that time; or

  • Provide a grade of incomplete (I) and make arrangements with the student on how to complete the coursework and receive a final grade; or

  • Refer the student to academic advising regarding Military Activation Withdrawal.

Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College student pregnancy leave policy

In accordance with Title IX, students are entitled to pregnancy-related leave for as long as it is deemed medically necessary by their physician. If a student mentions any issue related to a pregnancy and expresses a need to take leave or apply for a medical withdrawal, please make sure that the student contacts the Senior Director of Student Services, via their academic advisor. This will ensure that the student has access to the leave for all courses on a consistent basis. If you are contacted by Student Services about a student with documented need for a pregnancy-related leave, please work within the guidelines outlined below:

  • For leave less than two weeks for session C courses, or one week for session A/B or summer courses, students should be able to make up any missed work without affecting field placement. Longer leaves will be accommodated, however, students are still required to complete all assignments and other requirements that accumulate during their leave prior to the last day of classes.

  • Students who are unable to make up requirements prior to the end of the semester will receive a grade of incomplete (I) or have the option of applying for a medical withdrawal without loss of any tuition paid that semester.

  • During the leave, absences will be excused and will not negatively impact final grades.

Missed classes due to university-sanctioned activities

Students who participate in university-sanctioned activities that require classes to be missed should be given opportunities to make up examinations and other graded work. However, absence from class or examinations due to university-sanctioned activities does not relieve students from responsibility for any part of the coursework required during the period of the absence. The student should contact their instructor to make arrangements for making up tests/assignments within a reasonable time.

The specific activity program coordinator (e.g., assistant athletics director for academic services, director of forensics, director of bands) should, as early as possible, provide the college-designated individual with the class schedule of any student who may be required to miss class because of a university-sanctioned activity.

Students should inform their instructor early in the session of required class absences. You should attempt to provide opportunities for equivalent work, either before or after the class absence, in accordance with any college requirements.

Religious accommodations for students

The Arizona Board of Regents policy prohibits discrimination against any student, employee, or other individual because of that individual's religious beliefs or practices, or any absence thereof. ASU administrators and faculty members also are expected to make accommodations for the religious practices of individuals, and that accommodation needs to be provided for both attendance and assignments that fall due on those days. For further information, please review the course syllabus, ASU's policy on Accommodation for Religious Practices, and the calendar of Religious Holidays and Observances.
