A. The science year
Unit 1: Matter
The forms of matter, including solid, liquid and gas are examined with an emphasis on endothermic and exothermic reactions that cause changes in state.
Mass, volume and density as characteristic properties of matter are examined.
Physical and chemical interactions of matter.
Conservation of mass in a closed system.
Unit 2: Cells/Biology
The hierarchy of living things (cells, tissues, organs, organ systems) are examined with an emphasis on cell structure and function.
Unit 3: Earth Science
The Earth in the solar system is examined with an emphasis on the relationship between gravity and inertia.
Plate tectonics and the creation of new crust is examined with an emphasis on the rock cycle and the fossil record.
Unit 4: Light and Sound Waves
Structure and behavior of light and sound.
B. Expected learning outcomes and assessments
1. Students will be expected to illustrate basic to advanced understanding of the science themes expressed in the Massachusetts curriculum frameworks for grades 6-8.
2. Assessment will be made through formal assessment tools including quizzes and tests, formal laboratory outcomes, cooperative learning structures, activities, and daily informal observation.
C. Grading policy
Student grades will be calculated using the following categories and percentages:
Quiz/test 20%
Labs 30%
Classwork 40%
Homework 10%
Lab Rubric
30% of Science grade
Homework Rubric
10% of Science grade
3 points
Homework was completed and turned in on time, and is correct. There are no missing answers.
2 points
Homework was not completed or turned in on time. It is mostly correct. There are 1-2 missing answers.
1 point
Homework was not completed or turned in on time. It is mostly incorrect. There are more than 2 missing answers.
0 points: Homework was never turned in
Classwork Rubric

3 points
Student was prepared for class, always stayed on task and was always helpful to classmates and the teacher.
2 points
Student may or may not have been prepared for class, mostly stayed on task and was mostly helpful to classmates and the teacher.
1 point
Student was not prepared for class, was seldom on task and was sometimes disruptive to classmates and the teacher.
0 points: Student was disruptive and removed from class.
Quiz/Test
20% of Science Grade
Finally, points will be deducted from individual assignments if they are submitted with heading information (name, date, class name, etc) that is missing or incorrect.
