Survival Words
In Survival Words, students are given a worksheet with a list of important vocabulary words that will be included in a section of the text book. The students try to write a definition of each word based on what they know before reading the text. Students then pair up with a partner and read the section “Ear to Ear”. After reading is complete, the students go back to the worksheet and then re-write the definitions of the vocabulary words. An example of the worksheet is below:
By using the Survival Words worksheet before reading the text, prior knowledge is activated, and the list of important vocabulary words provides the student a preview of what they should be looking for. The student will then read with a purpose.
