Library Media Center Hours

Students: M-F 9:40am-4:00pm

Staff: M-F 8:15am-4:15pm

The Media Center is open at nearly all times during the school day. Students may check out books at any time with their teacher's permission, or during their regularly scheduled library time.

Checkout Policies

We want kids excited about reading and to choose books that they will enjoy and that will strengthen their reading skills. In kindergarten we want students to practice "browsing" in a library setting, the responsibility of borrowing books, and encourage them to try many different kinds of books. For this reason kindergartener's start the year checking out one book and work their way up to three by the end of the school year.

The other grade levels check out as followed:

Grades 1, 2, & 3 = three books at a time

Grades 4, 5, & 6 = four books at a time

Exceptions can be made to these limits, either more or less, depending on the needs of the student and his or her family. Students are also welcome to exchange books at any time during the week as they finish reading their books.

Overdue Books

Our goal is to be sure all students have access to materials and can check out books. With that in mind, we have a process students and families can follow to take care of very overdue, lost, or damaged books so that students can continue to borrow materials.

Books become overdue after two weeks. Our first step is to notify the student verbally when they have a book that is over due. Students are still allowed to check out books that week. The next week if the book has not been returned the student may check out one book and put another book on hold until they have returned the overdue book. If the book is still not returned the following week, making it more than a week overdue, and a month of the student having the book, the book will be considered lost and must be taken care of before the student can check out again. Bills for the lost book may be sent to the child's home at this time. Lost books must be paid for and a reimbursement can be issued if the book is found and returned within one year. If paying for a book causes an unreasonable hardship please contact us so that other arrangements can be made.

Exceptions to this process include graphic novels and Guinness Book of World Records which may be checked out for one week instead of two, and books checked out for novel studies which can have a longer check out period.

Please feel welcome to contact the staff in the library media center with any questions.

Taking Care of Books

At the beginning of each year, students are taught how to properly care for library books. Guidelines discussed include:

  1. Having a special place at home just for library books.

  2. Not eating or drinking while reading.

  3. Keeping books out of reach of younger children and pets.

  4. Turning the pages from the side or top corner instead of the bottom.

  5. Carrying books between home and school in a backpack.

  6. Using a bookmark instead of folding the corners of pages to keep your place.

Lost or Damaged Books

Students must pay for lost or damaged Media Center materials. If a lost item is found and returned to the media center within one year of payment, a full refund is given.

Having said that, we are very understanding that accidents happen. We take into consideration the circumstances of the damage, the severity of the damage to determine if the book can continue to be circulated, when assigning a fine or if a fine is even necessary.

Student Book Selection

Students are encouraged to make their own book selections as part of a learning process to determine which books are right for them. Students take out books for many different and valid reasons. They are encouraged to take many different types of books, both fiction and non-fiction. If you are unhappy with the choice your child makes, discuss it with him or her. Find out why he chose the book and if he enjoyed having it. If he feels he did not make a good choice, discuss what might be a better choice next time. Remind him that the library staff knows almost every book in the library and is always happy to match books with students.

Online Catalog

The Media Center has an online catalog and circulation system, using Follett's Destiny Software. Students are taught how to conduct computer searches for materials by subject, title, and author. Students are also given accounts on the system to keep track of their checked out materials, put materials on hold, and write reviews. The catalog may be accessed from home by clicking here

District Collection Development Policy

There is a district-wide policy concerning what kind of materials are acceptable to add to the library media center's collection To learn more about Roseville Area School's policy on collection development for technology, print, and digital materials, click here.

Donating Materials to the Media Center

The EDW media center gladly accepts new or gently used materials which fill our current needs and adhere to our collection development policy. Volunteer in the Media Center

We always need volunteers to make the media center run smoothly. Tasks include shelving returned materials, assisting students with location and circulation, mending damaged books, or other clerical jobs. Whether you would like to volunteer on a weekly or monthly basis or if you just come when you can, we really appreciate a few extra hands and love to have parents and grandparents involved in our community.
