"Give me some (The Ramp / Wild Leek Song)"
by Erie's Loose Change Band
From talking to farmers at the local market to visiting a botanical garden, there are many ways to learn about plants within a day trip from Meadville.
Meadville and Crawford County:
Allegheny College's Vegetable Garden, located on campus, south of Carr Hall, is a great place to teach young children what vegetables look like before they come to the store. The garden also sells produce to the public during the growing season.
Crawford County Master Gardeners
Administered through Penn State University, the Master Gardeners Program for Crawford County offers many events for the general public, both in Meadville and in the surrounding areas.
Allegheny's outreach program to schools in Northwestern Pennsylvania helps teachers bring hands-on experiments to study local waterways into their classrooms. The associated summer Creek Camp program is open to rising 10th and 11th graders all over the world.
In addition to the farmer's market, which runs every Saturday during the growing season, the Market House offers other opportunities to learn about plants, the arts, and engagement in community life.
Foundation for Sustainable Forests
Offers educational events on forest biology and management. Also supports landowners in sustainable forest management and protection of forests.
Botanical Society of Western Pennsylvania
The society offers regular presentations by members and guest speakers in Pittsburgh, plus field trips, all of which are open to the public. Some society events are scheduled close to Meadville. Membership is open to professionals and amateurs alike.
