Terrorism = increase activity from Islamic radicals using violence

dictatorship = little or no freedom in many nations.

Epidemics = spreading diseases (AIDS, Ebola)

Refugees = people forced to leave home with little or nothing.

Hunger = famine and starvation, not enough food

Desertification = expansion of deserts by natural or human causes = reduced arable land

Illiteracy = unable to read/write = poor education system.

Tribalism = people view themselves as part of an ethnic group, not a nation.

Civil Wars = often an extension of tribalism and ethnic conflict (Rwanda, Darfur...)

HIV/AIDS = little health care = death of working people = more orphans = unstable nations

Corruption = government officials work to enrich themselves, not serve the nation.

Poverty = very poor, many people are subsistence farmers = high birth rates

Reflect on the social and economic problems (desertification; European colonization; AIDS/Ebola; ethnic violence; civil war; poverty; genocide) that have limited the development of Sub-Saharan Africa.
