Objective:
Know the definition of geography and its significance.
Understand the five themes of geography and their importance in studying the world.
Be able to locate and label major countries and continents on a world map and identify examples of each of the five themes of geography in their local area or a region they are familiar with.
Materials:
Map of the world
Whiteboard or chalkboard
Markers or chalk
Handout and Assessment on the five themes of geography (see below)
Introduction (5 minutes):
Greet the students and introduce yourself.
Ask the students what they think geography is and why it's important.
Explain that geography is the study of the earth and its features, and it helps us understand the world we live in.
Body (40+ minutes):
Define the two branches of geography: physical geography and human geography, sometimes called cultural geography.
Explain the five themes of geography: location, place, human-environment interaction, movement, and region.
Show a map of the world and have students locate and label major countries and continents.
Discuss the importance of geography in understanding different cultures and societies.
Hand out the worksheet on the five themes of geography and have students work in pairs or small groups to identify examples of each theme in their local area or a region they are familiar with, encourage them to write in complete sentences.
Conclusion (15 minutes):
Review the five themes of geography and have students share their examples.
Ask the students what they learned and if they have any questions.
Thank the students for their participation and encourage them to continue exploring the world through geography and give assessment (exit ticket)
