Standardized Tests
The importance of these depends upon the policy and selectivity of each college.
SAT or ACT - Required by some colleges
SAT Subject test - Tests in specific subject areas
TOEFL or IELTS - English proficiency test required for international students.
IB - Tests are required for acceptance at some colleges and are useful in getting college credit at many schools.
Other tests - LNAT, BMAT, UKCAT,...
Most universities will require some form of standardized test for admission purposes. In the USA and some schools around the world, SAT or ACT exams are required while others will require IB exams. Students register individually for the SAT and ACT.
Colleges that are SAT/ACT optional/flexible
PSAT - At AISV, all students starting in grade 8 will take the PSAT funded by AISV. The dates are set and cannot be changed and there is no make-up available. The PSAT is a way for students to gain experience taking standardized tests and scores are evaluated to measure students' progress. PSAT scores are not official and are not sent to universities but a way for students to develop their strengths and work on their weaknesses.
Scores are usually available 2 months after the tests. Scores will be shared with the students and their parents.
PSAT 8/9 - Grade 8 and 9 will take the PSAT in the spring
PSAT 10/11 - Grade 10 and 11 will take the PSAT in the fall
SAT
Students need to register on their own on the College Board website and need to pay the fees. AISV is a testing center but AISV students do not have priority so it is important that students register early. Students can take the SAT as many times as they want; however, it is recommended that students take it between 2 and 3 times.
ACT -
English proficiency exams - Most universities will want to verify the level of English of international students. There are different ways to demonstrate your proficiency, including taking standardized tests that cover writing, reading, speaking, and listening skills. It is important to verify what universities are requiring to prove proficiency.
IELTS - Usually required for the UK but accepted by all US universities.
TOEFL - Usually required in North American and many countries around the world.
DUOLINGO - Accepted by some universities but NOT ALL.
IB Diploma - International Baccalaureate Organization
IB Diploma or IB Certificates might be required in some countries. Some countries have specific requirements and each university might also have theirs. It is best to check directly with the university as they might have specific requirements for some particular programs.
