Expected Grades and Predicted IB Grades
Projected Grades: Projected IB grades that are sent to universities during the application process
Projected grades will be shared with students. IB projected grades will be no more than ONE point higher than the grade the student received in the previous semester; however, it can be more than ONE point below if the student is not performing as usual. If there are major discrepancies, we ask that the student speak to their counselor or advisor.
Predicted Grades: Predicted IB Grades that are sent to the IBO in April. These will not be shared with the students as they are provided to the IBO for internal evaluation.
When you are an IB Diploma student, many universities in the US will be interested in knowing what your teachers think you will receive on the actual IB diploma. In the UK, the UCAS application requires that the school submit accurate expected IB grades. These grades are compiled by your teachers in late October of your senior year and will be given to the college counseling office by your teachers.
These UCAS projected grades play a crucial role for universities in the decision process since they will not make conditional offers to students who are likely to fall well below the course’s normal entrance requirements. Although individual students may appear advantaged by overly optimistic predictions there are definite negative aspects for the individual student concerned and most of all the wider student body community. In universities, where IB grades will determine your acceptance, such as in the UK and other systems, over-prediction may lead to a student holding unrealistically demanding offers from universities that they are unlikely to access when the final results are released. A more realistic set of predicted grades would have encouraged the student to select more appropriate institutions so when the results are released in July they would have a university place secured. In the US, more and more universities are requiring that IB students send official IB grades. Therefore, it is not because you have been accepted to a US university that the IB scores do not matter anymore.
Over-prediction can have negative consequences for the school community, especially for those students in lower year groups who will be applying in subsequent years. The admissions offices build up knowledge of schools, such as AISV, and how well their predictions match the final outcome Diploma grades. Gaining a reputation as a school that over-predicts means that future students’ applications are significantly disadvantaged.
