The Math Department requires that all students have a graphing calculator. The graphing calculator should be a TI-83 or TI-84 for all levels of Math 1-4. While this may seem like a financial burden, consider it an investment. Suppose someone pays full price for a TI-84 Plus Silver edition. This is a $200 calculator. However, this calculator will be used in Math 1, Math 2, Math 3, Math 4, AP Calculus, etc. Then, it may also be useful in college. Some teachers still use their calculators from college. At the best case scenario, this calculator will be used for 4 years of high school and 4 years of college, perhaps even after that. Suppose it is used for 10 years. That is a $20 per year investment. However, students do not have to buy the TI-84 Plus Silver Edition. A TI-83 will have all of the functions used at Legacy High School. TI-83's can be found online at various sources such as Ebay, Amazon, and Craigslist for as low as $40. Students should not purchase a TI-89 for Math 1-4 as it will not be allowed on any assessments. However, it can be useful once a student is in AP Calculus.
The types of Texas Instruments calculators suggested are Texas Instruments 83 Plus or Texas Instruments 84 Plus. When a student gets to Calculus he should then consider purchasing a Texas Instruments 89. In the courses prior to Calculus and Statistics students will not be allowed to use Texas Instruments 89's on tests. See the following spreadsheet for uses of each type of calculator.
*You may choose to buy the "Plus" version of the calculator. It will have a few more capabilities than the regular version.
Tests which allow calculators:
TI-83
TI-84
TI-89
