L2k Gallery

Recent graduate and Stanford student Liza Hafner's email to Mr. Hoffman about L2k's impact on her and her speech to the San Francisco Zoo:

Hey Mr. Hoffman,

I know it’s been a minute, but I’m just writing to say hi (and that L2k is still the best thing that’s happened to me)!

I’m super excited to be starting sophomore year, and I’m back at school early for a two-week seminar on animal behavior and enrichment in zoos. I’m working in a team of three (non-engineers) to design an enrichment for the peccary exhibit at the San Francisco Zoo (we’re building them a set of compartmentalized vertical feeders to slow down their foraging, among other things). The class has been intense—we met the animals and keepers on Tuesday, preliminary observation and data collection methodology on Wednesday, data collection on Thursday, and yesterday we pitched our enrichment ideas to the keepers and started prototyping them in the build lab. We’ll be doing our construction tomorrow, and next week we’ll be collecting data on the animals with the enrichment and then acting as docents for the exhibit for a few days. It’s felt a lot like R&D if R&D were smashed into 10 consecutive 16-hour days, so it’s been quite high-stress, but I’ve been SO thankful for my L2k tools! In addition to the engineering component, each team gives a 15-20 minute speech every day about their previous day’s work (to our classmates, the professors, and the zoo curators), so I’ve really been putting everything I’ve learned to use.

It’s been exciting doing engineering again after a year off from STEM to focus on linguistics! I’m back on the environmental science track (they call it Earth Systemshttps://pangea.stanford.edu/esys) and ready to roll this year with my intro bio/earthsys classes!

I’d love to hear what you’ve been up to this summer and how the start of school has been treating you! I heard you’re doing more Bio this year and no L2k?

I’m sorry I couldn’t stop in this summer at the start of the LHS year and say hi, but I hope all is well!

Best,

Liza
