Day 14: DNA Extraction
Your detective training is almost complete. You have learned about fingerprints, hair, teeth, foot size, and height. To complete your detective training, you’re going to to learn more about what is at the root of it all: DNA.
In DiTA #11, you will learn about what DNA is and how it’s used by forensic scientists, and you’ll learn how to extract DNA! When you’re done with that, you can move on DiTA #11 Bonus, which will guide you through virtual detective work!
Day 13: Dental Identification
Remember the piece of cheese in the trash can at the crime scene in the Case of the Missing Files? Bite marks, like fingerprints or footprints, can be matched to their owners to place a suspect at the scene of a crime. Your challenge today is to complete DiTA #10, which will guide you through the process of learning about teeth and about bite-mark identification.
Day 8: CATCH UP DAY + Interviews: Closing the Case of the Missing Files
First things first. We need to close the Case of the Missing Files. To do that, we need 3 master interview teams. Your job? Interview the 3 suspects, and determine who is telling the truth, and who is lying.
While the rest of the group gets going on Hairy-Cat Capers, you will begin your interviews. Who believes they could be a great interviewer?
Great. The 3 suspects you need to interview are on the Quest Board. It’s your job to contact them today and interview them. Your job is to ask what they were doing the week between Session 5 and Session 6, when the crime happened. You may ask if they committed the crime. This link will help you know if they are lying or not.
At the end of the day today, will you present your findings?
Day 7: Solving the Crime
Your challenge today is to complete DiTA #5, in which you will figure out which suspect was guilty in the Case of the Missing Files.
We now know the 3 suspects. There is additional evidence in your email from the chief.
This is the major test of your skills as a detective. Those of you who have used great detective practice throughout will be awarded with your detective badges.
We now know the names of the three suspects the chief has on her radar: Derek Peabody (brother of someone in witness protection), Commissioner Rebecca Toppings (was once in competition with the chief for a job), and Wallace Jenkins (a former secretary to the chief). Once you have figured out who committed the crime, you can move on to honing your observation skills by completing the DiTA #5 Bonus.
Day 6: Minute Mysteries
Your challenge on the last quest day each week is:
To catch up on DiTAs and bonus DiTAs that did not finish as a team this week. Then go through your ODRs and make sure they are your absolute best work, before storing them in your binder as your permanent DiT record. The chief won’t accept anything less!
Once you’ve finished your detective reports, you can move on to your next big challenge: write a two-minute mystery of your own! It is important for detectives to think about how criminals behave and to evaluate their own performance in certain situations. Can you capture the imagination of a criminal?
At the end of the day, you’ll get to share your finished two-minute mysteries during debrief. See you if you stump your studiomates!
Day 5: Handwriting and Chromatography
You may have noticed that there was a mysterious note left at the scene of the crime. The chief thinks that given the message, it may have been left there by the thief and she is already gathering information from three different suspects (for now, they’re called suspect 1, suspect 2, and suspect 3).
Everyone has unique handwriting. Even when someone is trying to disguise their handwriting, often it can still be used to identify them. Today, DiTA #4 will help you learn how to analyze handwriting, and then you’ll use your skills to analyze the note that was left at the scene of the crime and compare it to the handwriting samples the chief collected from the top three suspects. The evidence can be found at the Chief Detective Desk. When you’re done with that, you can begin working on to DiTA #4 Bonus on Chromatography!
Day 4: Footprints
Several footprints were found at the crime scene. Sometimes footprints are left on items that detectives can pick up and take with them (like the piece of paper at the scene of the crime). Other times, footprints need to be transferred to another item that can be taken back to the lab.
Making a cast of a footprint also makes that footprint permanent and easier to refer back to. Today, in DiTA #3, you will learn how to make a cast of a shoeprint, you will work to uncover more information about the suspects, and you’ll try to figure out how quickly the criminal was moving. When you’re done with DiTA #3 and you’ve given it your best effort, you can move on to DiTA #3 Bonus!
Two points to remember:
The materials for DiTA #3 are at the detective desk. You can collect them from the Chief Detective once you’ve completed DiTA #1 and #2 at an excellent level.
When making your own footprint, be extremely careful not to track mud inside!
Day 3: Catch-up & Minute Mysteries
Day 2: Fingerprinting
There were fingerprints left at the scene on some folders in the office. DiTA 2 will help you become a fingerprint expert. If you finish by the end of the day, you can move on to starting your DiTA 2 Bonus assignment, where you’ll classify some mystery prints found at the crime scene! Today you’ll get your reference book, Detective Science, which will help you throughout the rest of your training. Everything else you need for classification can be found at the Fingerprint Analysis Desk.
