COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The Performing Arts Academy offers students who have an interest in the performing arts to participate in courses that will prepare them for post secondary studies or entry into performing arts related occupations. The Intro To Performing Arts course is organized into three strands: Vocal, Dance and Drama. Students will rotate through each strand to encourage students to examine a wide range of forms that emphasize performance art. At the end of the 3rd marking period, students will be placed in one strand for the next 3 years within the Academy. *Please note that while students may express interest in a certain area, the performer will be placed in their final discipline through skill evaluations and teacher recommendation

Course Objective:

The Performing Arts Exploring Dance Course will provide students with an inclusive learning experience

through the process of exploring dance fundamentals, concepts for creating art, and dance performance.

Students will identify dance concepts utilizing imitative, creative and analytical approaches to understanding

dance within a variety of dance styles and forms. Fundamental dance skills and techniques are applied and practiced by the students during class, emphasizing the importance of anatomical awareness and creative development. Students create and perform movement sequences representative of several dance styles

including modern, ballet, and jazz dance. Students identify, create, develop and perform original movement sequences through explorations in improvisation and choreography, demonstrating understanding of dance

as an instrument for communication. Rules of etiquette are established and maintained to ensure all students

have equal opportunity to learn. Dance shoes and uniform are required for this course.

Medical & Absences/ Alternative Assignment
