2024 Oregon State Social Studies Standards
Three new state laws shaping social studies instruction in Oregon.
A curricular suite for social studies is currently in development. Much social science content is taught through the ELA and SLA curricula, Wit & Wisdom and ARC. While learning with these new programs this year, we will be adding in resources specific to social studies in order to complete the suite and fully teach the Oregon social science standards.
Senate Bill 13: Tribal History/Shared History provides lessons and curricula from both ODE and Oregon's nine federally recognized tribes.
ODE SB13 Curriculum, Fourth Grade (Lessons produced in collaboration with ODE and Oregon Tribes.)
Grand Ronde Tribal Curriculum, Fourth Grade
Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Indians Curriculum, Fourth Grade
Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians Curriculum, Fourth Grade
Newsela
Log in through Clever. Newsela has many articles and quizzes for current events, history, and geography. Articles are searchable by topic, levelable, and updated frequently. Their Curriculum Components section has articles that align with each module of Wit and Wisdom.
The diverse classroom library bins, which are checked out to each teacher and are specific to grade level, contain many titles that are ideal for instruction in social studies, particularly in the newly incorporated ethnic studies standards. (Written in blue in the standards document.)
If your classroom has a set of textbooks from a previous materials adoption, then you are welcome to continue using them for this year, in addition to the other resources listed.
Many resources, courtesy of Dr. Brenda Brainard, specific to our region, can be found in the 4J Natives Program Section of the Learning Hub.
