Video Editing in Panopto: the Basics

Panopto allows users to edit lectures without needing to download specific software. Users have the functionality to enhance the final video using the Panopto editing suite. The Panopto editor allows for basic and advanced fine-tuning of your recorded videos.

Please watch the following tutorial on how to edit your videos.

Launch the Panopto editor

After you record a video in Panopto and upload it, you can select the edit button to launch the Panopto Edit Suite. If you need to access a video already hosted in Panopto to edit, follow the below steps.

  2. Find the desired media resource, click Edit, then Edit Settings. If not, click the plus button at the desired location to add an activity or resource. From there, navigate to Resources, select Media, then Add.

  3. On the updating page, add a title then click the Panopto icon under the content section.

  4. Verify the appropriate Panopto destination folder.

  5. Select the Choose tab, then select the video you'd wish to edit.

A quick tour of the Panopto editor

Once the Panopto edit suite has been launched you will notice various sections of your screen.

  • Starting at the top left is the Primary Source stream. This will be designed as the camera and audio source.

  • The larger box to the right is the secondary source, which is usually a screen share, slides, or second camera.

  • Below the secondary source box is the timeline.

    • This visualizes all your recorded sources with P1 and S1 representing your primary and secondary sources.

    • The timeline also labels points in time within specific time signatures.

    • This is also where edits are conducted and visualized.

  • Finally the bottom left portion gives additional options such as adding captions, quizzes, and chapters.

Timeline information

  • As you playback the video, a red playhead will appear on the timeline. This corresponds with the playback location of the video in real time.

  • Panopto edits non-destructively, which means that if an edit or cut is made that portion remains intact, but is just skipped on final playback. This is to ensure that a user can always go back to the original recording if necessary.

Editing basics

  • To make an edit locate the area where the edit should begin.

    • Note the playhead location and time indicator.

    • Continue playing until the desired stop point is set.

  • From the noted beginning point, click and drag on the primary stream until you reach the end point of the edit.

    • A shaded area will represent the duration of the edit.

  • On playback, the final video will skip that portion of the video from both the primary and secondary sources.

  • There are no limits on the amount of edits a user creates.

  • To undo an edit or action, simply click the undo button at the top of the screen.

  • Please note that all edits will not reflect the final video until they are applied.
