There are two mounting brackets attached to each side rail. Lag screws are enclosed for attaching these brackets to the plywood bed base. You will need a 7/16 hex head nut driver and an electric drill for the installation.
(The picture to the left shows Bed Style Two)
There are two types of beds and the installation is different for each one:
Bed Style One - The bed is constructed with about 4 inches or so of foam on top of the base plywood.
Examining the foundation (The moveable part that is sort of like the box spring in a normal bed) you will feel and see a four-inch piece of foam on top of the foundation, right under the mattress. This is the older style. On this type of bed, the bracket needs to be attached to the underside of the foundation, using the hex head lad screws provided into 6 holes on the "L" portion of bracket.
Bed Style Two - The bed is constructed with upholstery and one inch of foam or less on top of the base plywood.
Examining the foundation (the moveable part that is sort of like the box spring in a normal bed) you will find that there is only a comparatively thin cover on the top, over a piece of plywood (though you can't see the wood). Sometimes you will find 4 inches on the bottom of the foundation, meaning that this bed style is sort of the reverse of bed style one. This is the newer bed style. On this type of bed, the bracket needs to be attached through the upholstrey to the top of the foundation, using the hex head lad screws provided into 6 holes on the "L" portion of bracket.
For either style, placement towards the head, foot or middle of the foundation is up to the discretion of the patient. This includes the upper and lower sections of the foundation that move. Make sure that the rail can be raised and lowered without squeezing the mattress - don't install it too tighly against the mattress edge. You may start the holes with a drill bit. However, do not pre-drill the entire holes for the lag screws. Do not over tighten but snug each lag screw up to the "L" portion of the bracket.
