Best By Government Test
Centennial District
REDWOOD CITY
Best By Government Test is a play on Redwood City's century-old slogan "Climate Best by Government Test". Indeed, the garden itself is perfectly suited to the microclimate of this section of the town, closer to the Bay than the hills with less frost risk for the Agave attentuatae that frame the keyhole walk-up for neighbors to visit when the patio is occupied by the delightful owners of this festive home. Drought-tolerant plants dominate the space, only a Japanese maple and hydrangea near the shaded front entrance asking for more than the natural rainfall's water, once established.
What the pictures don't show well is the mounding style ala the famous Ruth Bancroft Garden in Walnut Creek. Flat-ground gardens have their place, yet the undulating "canvas" here supports a natural feel and creates more possibilities, such as dangling trailing plants, semi-privacy for the front patio, hide and reveal effect for the passerby, and wonder for the many neighborhood children amid the feel of miniaturized mountains and lichen-spotted, eroding boulders.
Best By Government Test also serves as a pollinator garden, offering blooms in all seasons of the year and delight for the observer's eyes and ears. Strategically placed in front of the main windows is Asclepias speciosa, the monarch-attracting milkweed so they can be enjoyed from inside, often with a view just inches away. Even as we were installing, hummingbirds, dragonfliers, several species of butterflies, and other aerial acrobats started to show up, delighted by the new attractions and the fountain offering cooling slurps of water through hot Summer days.
Given the inviting pathway and patio with firepit bordered by horizontally trained jasmine and lavenders, the homeowners can now joyfully host friends and neighbors as they've been wanting to for years, amid a rainbow of enchanting visuals and olfactory-pleasing flowery breezes. City Council certified as best? Not officially so, but they are not the audience that matters here. In all, the whole neighborhood wins with Best By Government Test, wondrous on a walk-by or as the any-seasons setting for holiday displays and gatherings.

The Understory
The Marina District
SAN FRANCISCO
The Understory is a whimsical, immersive, living-work-of-art experience. Once you fatefully step from the entrance stairs landing to the brick you are suddenly somewhere ... else. A lush, clean, verdant canopy hints at a rainforest environment, but aren't we in San Francisco? And it is so serene and warm back here - "Are we not still in San Francisco!!??" Rest easy my friend, we are merely standing on the iridescent surface of the pearl of the oyster, chlorophyll cosmos above, woodsy wonders at foot.
You sit, and now notice the steady trickle of the fountain, the gong of the neighbor's windchime. You realize in that moment that sound is meant to be both heard and felt. It's merely the first epiphany of your day that is now off to a very good start. You text your mother just to let her know you love her. You take a deep breath without telling yourself to. Upon inhalation, your olfactories are caressed to a refresh with the soft scent of mock orange. You laugh to yourself and ask "Should I just lay down? I feel so ... safe here."
"Do whatever you wish," The Understory whispers back. You are startled that you're not startled that this garden speaks. Instead, you flashback to your mother's womb. You text her again to say, "Like Mom though, I really love you." She texts back to remind you she doesn't have any money.
The Understory is a wildly imaginative, rich tapestry of color and texture that hugs you into communion and mind-altering awe with Mother Nature, and thus, you deduce, for your second epiphany of the day, all of humanity. Now tapped into the genius that is our collective hearts and heads, your new story starts to write itself, pen name;
Invisible Hand.
All together, The Understory is a celebration of functional, durable living art that serves as a vessel of ever-evolving thus unending inspiration. From the playful to the elegant, she somehow provides the suggestions we need as we dare towards our dreams through our phones, laptops, and conversations under the canopy. We are reminded to both look up and dig down, that Fibonacci spirals occur naturally, but we can also create them, that we are not in control of this world, but we are in control of our lives.
Yes, rest easy, friend. The Understory at Neon won't run out of noble gas. It runs on magic, and there's no shortage of supply.

Rooftop Reverie is kaleidoscopic oasis of color and comfort, a romper roost amid dramatic views of the San Francisco skyline, color-grid cargo ships gliding past Alcatraz, and dive-bombing Blue Angels during Fleet Week.
Color and comfort were not words one would use to describe this Russian Hill perch before our build. Completely exposed to the oft whipping westerlies, hopes of BBQs with out the "burrr" were too frequently dashed before our first order of business; a windbreak wall that would also serve as the support for a dazzling display of hanging evergreen perennials. Additional designer rail planters and showy container displays in organically patterned groups of pots create a feast of flowers nearly year-round for human eyes and hummingbird tongues.
Succulents, prone to stress with changes in sun exposure, temperature, or watering, abound amid Rooftop Reverie, providing a perpetual show of morphing color and structure, hence the kaleidoscopic effect. What's that you see? That whirl of pixelated color over there bouncing with prismatic brilliance atop Russian Hill? Is it Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds? No, it's just a dreamy, warm, private, highly functional Mexican-style oasis - a nod to the owner's heritage - smack dab in the middle of some of the world's most iconic views!
Visits available upon request. Free for prospective clients.

La Rosa Nostra is a symbol of the Ukrainian people's desire for peace. Pre-installation, it was overrun with unwanted invaders, as was the homeland of its owners. The now thriving gardenette is a statement that, ultimately, Love triumphs over violence and peace will be ours, but it is to be gained, not given.
Occupying a secretive corner of this beautiful Italian Renaissance Revival home, La Rosa Nostra both calms and delights its visitors with a gradient show of whites to pinks to oranges to reds to a pop of purple provided by the potted tree rose. This "rose rainbow" will become more grand as each rose matures, including pink and white Eden climbers that will cover the trellises.
Nearly completely wind-protected, the nine robust bushes breath from their petals a bouquet of fragrance that lingers in the space, providing a natural aromatherapy for human and animal visitors alike. Moreover, each carefully selected cultivar is bred to be a profuse bloomer for decades to come. This means the owners of La Rosa Nostra needn't buy cut roses, will easily have enough to place a small bouquet in every room of their home through 6-8 months of the year, and freely give bouquets as gifts - for the next 30 years.
Who wins in the end, Mr. President of Russia? He's chosen to be a thorn, but in the long run nobody remembers a prick. Love, consistent care, exchange of minerals using mycorrhizal networks - our devotional love and Mother Mycelium working in concert, the roses flourish. Therefore, inevitably, La Rosa Nostra is also a victory garden.
