Welcome to the warm heart of Africa. Or 'takulandirani' as we say in Chichewa!

Tourism in Malawi

Malawi’s tourist industry is vital to the overall economy of the country, offering attractions such as Lake Malawi, Mulanje Mountain, Zomba Plateau and national parks, including Kasungu, Liwonde and Nyika National Park.

As far back as 2014, tourism contributed 4.5% to the national GDP and provided 3.8% of all jobs. In recent years, it has seen double digit growth. However, since the pandemic struck in 2020, it is believed the industry has lost K42billion (£39million) resulting in massive unemployment and significant deprivation.

'Wa Wa' from Aaron and Paul

We are introduced to our guides for the next two weeks and given a few ground - or rather, bus - rules!

Introducing Aaron and Paul

Aaron and, more recently, Paul have been helping to shepherd our growing number of students around Malawi since 2012.

They are now an essential part of the Watson's Malawi Partnership team, helping us support our partners' programmes when we cannot be there in person.

We'll be travelling in a fleet of air conditioned Skywaves buses with an accompanying van to take our kit.
