Our Community
The Middletown Special Education Community is about 20%, or one-fifth of the total student population and is even larger when students with 504s are also included. Students range in age from 3 to 21 years old. The most common classification for students is a single learning disability. Other disabilities include adhd, autism, down syndrome, dyslexia, emotional regulation, speech/language or hearing/vision impairments, other health or physical impairments, as well as multiple disabilities. Special education is not a place, and most students with special needs are in the general education classroom. In 2018, about 50% of students with IEPs were in the general education class for 80% or more of the school day, 34% were in general education 40-80% of the day, and 13% in less than 40% of the day. Less than 3.5% of students were placed out of district, at home, or in the hospital.
