The TGROW model

The TGROW (or GROW) model is a structure to adopt when having a mentor or instructional coaching conversation with your trainee. It is focused on the mentor asking the trainee to identify their goal, considers various options, weigh up the most/least desirable option, and then set targets to achieve that goal.

We suggest that mentors use the TGROW model to structure the Weekly Development Meetings, making use of the curriculum questions set each week.

  • What do you want to specifically achieve?

  • Why is that important?

  • What difference will achieving this goal make to you or your practice?

  • What is holding you back at the moment?

  • What if you do nothing?

  • What would you like to achieve by the end of this conversation?

  • How would you like this situation to look next week/month/year?

  • How much control do you have in this situation?

  • What have you already tried? What worked? What didn't

  • Have you experienced this before with another class/learner? If so, what did you do?

  • What is preventing you from...?

  • What do you think the problem is?

  • What is your role in this situation?

  • What are you learning from this situation?

  • If all barriers (money, time, resources) where removed, what could you do?

  • Give me 5 things you could do in this situation

  • How can you make this easier?

  • Imagine a point in the future where this is resolved. How did you get there?

  • If I was you, what would you suggest I do?

  • What would your course tutor or Link Tutor suggest?

  • What is your most preferred option?

  • What will you do? By When?

  • How will you know you have been successful?

  • What can I do to support you in this?

  • How can you support yourself to make this happen?

  • What's the first thing you need to do?

  • Rate yourself 1-10 on your level of motivation to resolve this. What would it take to get to 10?

  • What opportunities do you need to ensure success?
