Exhibit 4

Movie Poster

Background: For this assignment, we were asked to take parts of an image and place them within a new image. I decided to make a poster for one of my favorite movies, Moonrise Kingdom.

Design:

  • Contrast: I liked the analogous colors of blue, yellow and green that already existed in the image. I added in an image of the two main characters, one of whom blends with the image and the other provides contrast with her pink jacket and hat. I additionally added contrast by using a decorative font paired with a serif font. I've also created contrast by using a normal photograph with a background photograph that has been transformed into an oil painting.

  • Alignment: I've left aligned the characters and the two lines of font, with the characters along either side of the rule of thirds line. I additionally tried to space the words moonrise and kingdom around the top part of the house.

  • Repetition: I built in repetition by using colors from the image itself in the text

  • Proximity: I've kept the two text pieces close together and made one larger than the other to draw the eye in for the first line and then bring the eye to the second line.

Photoshop Skills Used:

  • I used the quick select tool to select the characters from an image of them. I then used the refine edge brush tool to get some of the finer details from the girl's hair and the boy's hat. I used the free transform tool to place them and adjust their size in relation to the rest of the photo.

  • I used the oil paint image filter to transform the original image and make it look like a painting.

  • I used the text tool to place and scale the text.

  • I used the brush tool to adjust the color of the sky so that the text could be more readable.

  • I used the Minimum filter to clean up the edges on the characters.

Revisions:

  • I added sections of white to the top of the image using the paint brush prior to adding the oil paint effect. I then adjusted the font color to improve legibility.
