Math Timings
WSD Math Timing Guidelines
Fluency is much more than answering questions quickly.
Timing students is one way to assess student's understanding.
Timings are not a way to teach fluency.
Before embarking on a "timing" students should have a deep conceptual background of the skill. Timings should not be used in Kindergarten and First grade.
The fastest students should be asked to complete problems is at a rate of 1 problem per 3 seconds. The most problems students should be required to complete in a timing setting is 30.
Timings should be be fun and energizing, not punitive.
If students can not write or type digits quickly, allow them to prove their fluency by orally giving answers.
Appropriate Timings
*Students should never be required to answer complete more than 1 problem every 3 seconds*
