Art nouveau & art deco movements emerged as reactions to major world events: industrial revolution & world war 1. whilst both embraced modernist elements they are easy to distinguish. Art Nouveau (1880’s thru to just before world war 1.) is french for ‘new art’, it is also known as Jugendstil, german for ‘youth style’ & a magazine ‘Jugend’ which promoted it. Characterised by organic floral & plant inspired motifs & highly stylised curvilinear forms. Art Deco 1920’s - mid 1930’s) emerged after world war 1. creating a whole new opulence and extravagance that defined the jazz age & art deco aesthetic.
