Methods

The data used in this study was collected during June 2019 via an anonymous survey which was distributed primarily on social media.

A total of 749 responses were collected; the target population of this study was "comics workers". This project aimed to incorporate perspectives from across the industry, and participation was not limited to the contributions of mainstream comics professionals.

This project is inspired by a 2013 study conducted by Dr. Benjamin Woo. Please click here to learn more about the eligibility requirements for this study.

The majority of basic results present individual findings either as proportional values (percentages) or in aggregate form (totals/counts). These pages typically present the patterns of responses given; they do not assess responses which were not given. Crosstab evaluations present the ways in which data is disbursed - these charts represent the ways variables coincide with one another (patterns between variable 1 AND variable 2). Missing responses are slightly more visible in the crosstabs than the basic results because certain variable combinations do not necessarily add to 100%. While this presents a limitation to the findings of this study, this trend in the data is unexpected because responses for all fields of the survey were not required. Regression analyses tend to present predictive values with respect specific question(s) from the survey instrument.
