Participant Demographics

This page presents the basic demographic composition of the participants from the 2019 comics workforce study.

Race and/or Ethnicity

"Other" identities included:

        • Multi-ethnic
        • Biracial
        • Greek
        • Hebrew
        • Jewish
        • Indigenous

Gender

"Other" gender identities listed generally fell into two broad categories: trans identities and genderqueer.

Sexual Identity

A variety of "other" sexual identities were provided. These included, but were not limited to: Pansexual, Asexual, Demisexual, and Queer identity.

Marital Status

For our purposes, "living common law" refers to situations where people of the opposite sex or of the same sex are living together as a couple but are not legally married to that person. It includes situations where the members of such a couple are living apart temporarily because of illness, work or school.

Age

The average worker in this study is 34.5 years of age.

The median age was 33; 29 years of age was the most frequent response.

The youngest participant was 17 years of age, and the eldest was 81.

Country of Origin

Respondents reported being born in a wide variety of countries, with a large number of participants responding that they were born in the United States, Canada, England, France, Brazil, Mexico, the Philippines, Columbia, Malaysia, Ireland, Australia, the Netherlands, Italy, China, and Germany (among other nations).

Religious Affiliation

The majority of respondents noted that they were not affiliated with a religion; those who were hailed from a wide variety of denominations including, but not limited to: Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Paganism.
