HB 2472 Jo's Law

The 2019 Session is currently underway in Richmond, and there are several bills up for consideration, that will shape our lives in the Commonwealth. I’d like to draw your attention to HB2474, a bill I affectionately refer to as “Jo’s Law,” in honor of my mother and our experience when she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's.

Expediting long-term care, is something that will be of assistance to many families in the Commonwealth, to have resources in order to ensure their loved one’s quality of life, dignity, and the professional assistance needed for caregivers caring for their terminally ill loved ones.

Note: Long-term care benefits are not typically covered in most health care policies. Most citizens do not have long-term care in place, unless they have explicitly secured long-term care insurance in addition to their regular healthcare policy.

What is HB 2474?

HB 2474 is being led by Honorable Delegate Luke Torian, 52nd District, and is being referred to the Sub Committee on Health, Welfare, and Institutions.

1. That the Code of Virginia is amended by adding a section numbered 32.1-330.02 as follows:

§ 32.1-330.02. Expedited processing of certain applications for long term care.

The Department shall develop and implement an expedited process for review of applications and preadmission screening for community or institutional long-term care services, as defined in the state plan for medical assistance, for individuals diagnosed with a terminal condition, as certified by the applicant's treating physician. Such process shall ensure that eligibility determinations for applicants for community or institutional long term care services who have been diagnosed with a terminal condition are completed within 10 business days of the date of receipt of the signed application.

Virginia Municipal League Conference - 10/2018

I had the pleasure of attending the Virginia Municipal League's (VML) Annual Conference in Hampton, Virginia. The City of Hampton was a wonderful host, and VML provided the opportunity for elected officials from municipalities across the Commonwealth to participate in a variety of practical, real, and relevant, sessions beneficial to our localities. The conference also provided the opportunities to network and discuss best practices with other elected officials.

To the left, is a video of photos and videos captured during the conference, and points of interest in the City of Hampton from my "lens."

A personal highlight for me, was the mobile tour of the "Academies of Hampton!" To say I was amazed about this program is an understatement. My group toured the academies at Bethel High School, and we were led by a fantastic group of "ambassadors!" During the visit, I had my fingerprints taken by the Academy of Law and Public Safety; the Governor's Health Sciences Academy tested my blood and analyzed it to determine my blood type. The students were extremely professional, and exemplified what it means to lead and take ownership of their educational journeys. Every high school should adopt the Academy model. The future is in really good hands!

The Town of Dumfries, is the first locality in Prince William County, to adopt a policy that protects the Human Rights of ALL of its employees, and perhaps one of the few in our region to adopt a progressive non-discrimination policy that protects employees based on gender identity or sexual orientation.
