Another year

So, this is it. The last dying day of 2012.

A year isn't just a human concept, unlike some units. The Fahrenheit scale was calibrated based on human body temperature. The year, however, is based on the revolution of the earth around the sun, and affects everyone: the changing of the seasons regulates growth - spring, summer, fall, and winter can be felt by the smallest fern and the largest animal.

However, the beginning of the year is arbitrary. The Chinese calendar, for example, has a different day for the beginning of the year. That's because the year is a cycle - at the end of the year, one just returns to the beginning. So why do we celebrate the new year?

The beginning of a year means a fresh start. One can make new goals, dream of new plans, and believe in oneself once more, knowing that, in the new year, like the old, there would be gladness and sadness, beginnings and ends, changes and steadfastness.

So as the new year crawls across the globe, ready to metamorphose into a butterfly of rainbow possibilities, I say:

(tl;dr:) Happy new year.
