PressRelease

September 15, 2014

For the past decade, the Schaperow Psychology Center of CT (PsychologyCT.com) has offered evidence-based holistic services. Continuing our existing services, and now adding more, we are proud to announce the grand opening of the Holistic Wellness Center of CT. We are Connecticut’s only practice offering the array of services listed below:

Yoga Therapy (2017 update: Yoga not presently offered): Yoga therapy goes beyond standard yoga. Yoga therapists are highly credentialed therapists who have studied the principles of yoga as pertaining to specific physical and mental stressors. The yoga therapist will meet with an individual client for only several sessions to give the tools needed for the client to then practice the helpful yoga methods tailored to that client’s specific circumstances. Yoga therapy can help with depression, anxiety, stress, multiple sclerosis, stress-related digestive difficulties, inattention, etc.

Herbology and Wild Plant and Mushroom Identification: Typical herbalists will recommend herbs based on tradition and hearsay. Often times such effectiveness is of no statistical difference from placebo. Our herbology services are performed by Sam Schaperow, B.S., M.S., who’s not only a practicing psychotherapist with a Masters in Science, but also began learning about wild plants and mushrooms through the University of Connecticut (UCONN) during his Bachelors of Science in human development [& also in family relations] program nearly two decades ago. Sam is able to help people to learn the edibility and medicinal effects of what is in our environment, and does so with a scientific mind. This means reviewing research into what is truly helpful, what is unproven, and what is disproven.

Reiki: Our Reiki practitioners, Lee Oren, LCSW, and Sandy Hartnett, RYT500, create a soothing environment to help center a person and promote wellness. Light touch and towels may be used to further sooth the individual. We recommend 2-3 sessions, which may be sufficient to restore balance. If a boost is needed ever in the future, either come back as needed or simulate the calming/healing environment with a friend or significant other. You’ll know if it is equally helpful by comparing to the trained Reiki practitioner’s effect on you to the subsequent simulation. Recently a client of our Center said it was a deeply and profoundly relaxing experience. Given how stress can affect us physically and mentally, it makes sense that Reiki can help many people.

Qigong and Meditation: When at UCONN, Sam Schaperow, B.S., M.S. was a participant researcher into the actual healing effects of meditative Yan Xin Qigong. E.g., it can benefit certain types of back problems, anxiety, depression, and stress-affected illnesses. Dr. John M. González learned meditation through his Ph.D. program in transpersonal psychology. Dr. González is also fluent in Spanish.

Art Therapy: For non-artists, and artists alike, our Center offers therapy for anxiety, depression, and other mental illnesses. Because art therapy does not require artistic skill, it can be used with most people. Art therapy can also be especially indicated for highly visual people that have a less auditory learning style.

Between our practice’s longevity, unique offerings, and highly educated practitioners, we are able to offer a combination of services that no other Holistic Center can offer in CT.
