"Frankie" Gilbert Franklin Everton, Jr., passed away peacefully at home on April 4, 2014. He was born in the Indian River section of Norfolk County on January 16, 1938 and was the eldest son of the late Gilbert Franklin and Evelyn Miller Everton. Besides his parents he was predeceased by a brother, Gerald T. “Jerry” Everton.

Frankie loved people and was a friend to all. He was known affectionately by his neighbors as the Major of Fentress. For several years he served as Chairman of the Ushers and Greeters at Centerville Baptist Church where it was his great joy to welcome worshipers, especially the children.

An outdoorsman, Frankie enjoyed hunting and many sports. He was a member of the North Landing Hunt Club and a former member of the Avery’s Mill Hunt club. For many years he coached boy’s baseball in Great Bridge, instilling character traits along with skills in the youngsters he coached. In addition, he spent many happy times showing his beloved mules, Jack and Pearl at state and county fairs throughout the Mid-Atlantic States and beyond.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 56 years, Patricia Poteat Everton; his son, Gregory B. Everton and his wife, Cheril; and son, Gary F. Everton; his grandson, Parker Everton; a brother, Gary L. Everton and his wife, Carolyn; and beloved nieces, nephews and cousins. The family wishes to express its grateful appreciation to the caregivers of Comfort Care Hospice of Chesapeake, and to Debbie Williamson and Louise Urquhart whose compassionate care was a blessing to Frankie and to his family.

A service to celebrate his life will be held on Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at 1:30 p.m. at Centerville Baptist Church, 901 South Centerville Turnpike, Chesapeake with Pastor Kevin Ritter officiating. He will be laid to rest at Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Graham Funeral Home, 1112 Kempsville Road, Chesapeake on Monday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and other times at the residence.
