Range Rover US & Americas
Automotive Compliance Inc. (ACI), Harbor City, CA imported the Range Rover's from UK dealers,
made them smog legal certified to American smog laws by installing three-way catalytic converter,
an air injection pump and a charcoal canister to capture evaporating fuel. Because the vehicles are
considered as used before import, the process is much lenient and less expensive than if the manufactorer should do the import.
By eliminating the centre muffler and installing the catalytic converter the back pressure was reduced
and more pleasant exhaust rumble sound than original UK derivative. ACI estimated that the power
output was 10% lower with the catalytic installed.
In 1980 ACI hoped to import 50 Range Rover's per year and sold them through dealers in Houston, Texas; Miami, Florida; Chicago, Illinois and Harbor City, California.
Catalytic converter, air pump and charcoal canister installations
Wolfshead Inc., Century City, CA also import company of exotic vehicles like Ferrari Boxer,
BMW M1 and Lamborghini Countach, sold Range Rover's from 1979 to a price of $29,500.
US launch in 1987 there were a steady, but tiny stream of US 'Grey Market' Range Rover imports.
An article in Canadian Driving, Sept. 1974, told that CKD Range Rover assembly were done in
Venezuela and Costa Rica, but no export to US or Canada. It was hoped that UK export to Canada
could start in 1977 when higher production capacity was planned, but 10 more years should go.
'Grey Market' import of Range Rover's to US during 70's and 80's
Land-Rover Series III were imported in US, but decline in sales and new smog regulations resultet
that British Leyland withdraw themselves from the US market in 1974. From early 70's untill official
But, British Leyland did not launch the new Range Rover on the US market, despite that the
development of Range Rover was with the American market in focus. Both due to lack of financials
and production capacity delayed official Range Rover organized import to US to 1987.
Range Rover was intended to be sold in US when it was introduced in June 1970. An article in
Road & Track, Sept. 1970, told that a US launch was planned mid-year 1971 with options like
tinted glass, air conditioning and, if ready; automatic transmission, to a base price of $ 5,300.

In addition to Venezuela; Costa Rica also had CKD assembly Range Rover production.
Specifications for Range Rover produced in Venezuela to differ from Solihull, UK vehicles:
- Body colours differed from UK produced, also metallic available in 1970's
- Air conditioning system with special duct outlets and no heating system
- York A/C compressor and alternator mounted with special brackets at same side of engine
- Different interior pattern which altered through production, beige or black interior available
- Special centre console with radio fitting and glovebox, available in beige or black colours and sizes
- Footwell and gearbox tunnel mats in PVC fabric with sound deadening backing
- Upper rear tailgate without heating elements, but with rear wiper and washer system
- Tinted windows in greener colour than from UK for reduced temperature inside Range Rover produced in Venezuela with special colour and interior

Venezuela in addition to the original Land-Rover production. The production ran from 1975 to 1982 with a yearly production of 700 Range Rovers. Many well kept Range Rover vehicles still exist in
Venezuela and the local Land Rover/Range Rover community is very active.

In 1975 Auto Agro in Venezuela started CKD (Completely Knocked Down) assembly production in
Aston Martin Lagonda of North America Inc., Greenwich, Connecticut did import and adverted for
4 door Range Rover's at eastern part of US in 1984.
Golden Acorn Inc. Beverley Hills, CA did import and federalized at least 12 2 door Range Rover's
in 1983. Similar import companies were also located in Florida and Texas.

When stopped at curbside, the driver can depress a dash-mounted button which
lowers the vehicle 2.4 inches for easier entry and exit from the vehicle. When
shifted into drive, the vehicle automatically rises to standard ride height.
At highway speeds over 50 mph, the vehicle automatically lowers 0.8 inches for
improved aerodynamics, a lower center of gravity and firmer directional
handling feel.
When off-road conditions turn more extreme, the driver mayselect the high profile
mode, raising the vehicle 1.6 inches above standard ride height for more ground
clearance and better approach and departure angles.

In 1995 the 100 inch model were the only available "Classic" model
- EAS - Electronic controlled air suspension with 3 selectable modes and 2 automatic modes:
- Access Mode: For easy entry and exit and cargo loading, by pushing
the "down" button. Lower the vehicle by 2.4 inches/60 mm.
- Standard Mode: For routine around town driving and normal off-road conditions
- High Profile Mode: For off-road adventure like deep water crossing or severe
off-road conditions. Raise the vehicle with 1.6 inches/40 mm.
Maximum water deep is nearly 22 inches capability.
- Low Profile Mode: Automatic selected when speed is above 50 mph for improved
handling and aerodynamic efficiency, dropping 3/4 inch/20 mm.
- Extended Profile Mode: Automatic selected in extreme off-road situations and
the system automatically lowers the wheels to provide necessary traction.
The system will automatically cause a wheel to reach down a full 2.8 inches/70 mm
from standard height to gain traction if the vehicle is high centered off-road.
- The suspension system automatically reverts to the standard position in about
three seconds when speed exceeds 35 mph.
- Level sensors at all four wheels and anti sway bars front (25 mm) and rear (18.5 mm).
- Maximum high - low raise range of 5.1 inches/130 mm
- ETC - Electronic Traction Control to give improved traction on ice and snow and further
improves its outstanding performance in the most severe off-road conditions.
