From the Press Release of October 1978

Land Rover Limited grows stronger

The £30 million first phase of the Land Rover Limited four wheel drive expansion programme is well under way and is on schedule to achieve a fifty per cent increase in Range Rover capacity and ten per cent increase in Land Rover capacity by Spring 1979.

The first phase is part of an overall £280 million investment, aimed at nearly doubling production of Land Rovers and Range Rovers by 1982. Phase two, involving capital expenditure of £250 million, will be submitted to the BL Board in the next few weeks.

Currently, Land Rover limited has fifteen per cent of the world four wheel drive market and the expansion will help the company strengthen its position and meet increasing competition.

Under the first phase, major modernisation and improvements to plant and equipment are being made at Solihull - close to the National Exhibition Centre - and at engine and transmission factories in the Birmingham area.

Said mike Hodgkinson, managing director of Land Rover Limited: "It is essential to increase production to maintain a healthy and profitable share of the world market. We are not prepared to sit back and rest on our hard-won reputation for four wheel drive vehicles.

"We are investing in new plant and machinery to spearhead the fight for a bigger slice of the market and we shall achieve this through the determination and co-operation of both management and workforce."
