Subject: petition to protect and enhance Northland rail

Hello all, I am just sending a petition which some of you maybe interested in spreading around and getting a few signatures.

Here are 3 key points about the issue, but if you want more information I can send you more reading material.

Kiwirail who operate and run NZs rail system are proposing to close the rail line between Auckland and Whangarei.

In effect this will kill northlands rail.

With the projected number of logging trucks to double over coming years, as a method of extracting the mature pine forests in Northland, our roads are soon to be even busier with trucks. In our eyes it makes economic and environmental sense to use the existing train line.

One train carrys the equivalent of 280 Trucks or more and the Ministry of Transports 2005 study (currently being updated) concludes that trucks only meet 56% of their costs for roads, while motorists pay 64% of their costs, buses 63% and rail 77%. [1].

Sure the rail needs investment to bring it back up to speed, but we must have this discussion because if we loose the rail now, we will have lost it for ever.

Thanks for your interest. Regards James
