Around The Lake

Per previous emails, you know the board has decided to secure a DNR grant to have UW Oshkosh students spend 200 hours at our boat ramp to help prevent EWM and other invasive species from entering or leaving Anvil Lake.program will work the same as last 2 years.

The DNR grant covers 75% of the cost and the association is responsible for 25% of the cost of the interns. Our 25% equals $960.00. We can fulfill the $960.00 by volunteering to do AIS screening and education. We will need 80 hours of volunteer time to cover the $960.00. We had 75 volunteer hours last year. Any volunteer hours over 80 hours will be credited to our lake management planning project.

CBCW Volunteer Instructions

  1. 1. The DNR Watercraft Inspection sheets have not changed from last year.
  2. 2. CBCW materials buckets will again be at Jim and Gina Egan's home, Marge and Bob Mendlesky's home, and Barbara and Ron Harms home. The buckets will be outside next to their respective garages. Also, you can go to the Wisconsin DNR website to download the inspection form.
  3. 3. Volunteers need to make sure their interaction with boaters and personal watercraft users is pleasant and non-confrontational. There will be a form in the buckets to fill out if anyone is out of line.
  4. 4. I am attaching the interns' schedule to this email. Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday are wide open each week. The attached schedule will give you the interns hours for the other 4 days of the week.
  5. 5. Judi Wyrembeck has agreed to coordinate the volunteer schedule for the summer. Please email or call Judi. Email address: judiwy@yahoo.com
  6. 6. All volunteer hours have to be completed by Labor Day weekend and Judi has to enter the data by the end of September..
  7. 7. Again, it very important for the lake that we all take at least on 2 hour shift at the boat landing.

Anvil Lake Association members Sandy and Don Gillum were featured in a full length article published in the January 28, 2015 issue of The Vilas County News. The article first appeared in The Anvil Lake Chronicle.

Anvil Lake native Jon Zaugg has produced an outstanding video for his parent's resort with lots of great views of Anvil Lake. The video includes arial footage filmed from a camera that was mounted on a drone. The video can be viewed HERE.

Military Road resident Bob Egan has been named vice president of the Phelps Chamber of Commerce.

The official ice in date for 2014 is November 15th. According to Sandy Gillum of Bald Eagle Lane, there has been an average loss of 12 days of ice cover over the past 20 years. Fewer days of ice coverage allows more days of solar radiation absorption, resulting in higher water temperature over a longer time span, more available light for aquatic plant growth and more days of evaporation. The trend, however, may be shifting. This year's ice-in date is the earliest since 1996.

More than 650 pounds of Eurasian Water Milfoil (EWM) has been taken out of the north end of Anvil Lake this summer. Many Waters, the company our association has hired to fight milfoil, used a specially equipped pontoon boat to harvest 500 pounds. Volunteers Sam and Gene Welhoefer, of Military Road, have harvested 150 pounds during scuba dives. Since almost all the milfoil is confined to the north bay, it is advisable to avoid that area when boating. Milfoil, dislodged by boat traffic, can spread to other areas of the lake.

Since October of 2011, the US Geological Survey (USGS) has been accumulating data on the Anvil Lake watershed under a grant that was obtained by the Town of Washington. You can learn more about the study by clicking on the link to your left marked "Anvil Lake Protection Grant." At the bottom of that page are two links that will take you to a description of the study and also day-by-day data on Anvil Lake weather.

"Little Northie" with his mom enjoy a picture perfect autumn afternoon

CHECK OUT THE LINK BELOW THAT WILL TAKE YOU TO A VIDEO OF UW-MADISON PROFESSOR EMILY STANLEY AND US GEOLOGICAL SURVEY HYDROLOGIST RANDY HUNT AS THEY EXPLORE "HOW WATER WORKS IN THE NORTHWOODS." THE PROGRAM WAS PRESENTED ON DECEMBER 3 IN MINOQUA. EMILY AND RANDY EXAMINE THE CRITICAL LINKAGES BETWEEN STREAMS, WETLANDS AND LAKES IN THE WATER-RICH LANDSCAPE OF NORTHERN WISCONSIN. AND THEY DISCUSS HOW GROUNDWATER — THE HIDDEN WATER BENEATH OUR FEET — IMPACTS THE SURFACE FEATURES WE SEE AND ENJOY EACH DAY. RANDY AND EMILY EXPLAIN HOW HEALTHY WATERSHEDS MEAN HEALTHY WATERS; AND HOW HEALTHY WATERS MEAN HEALTHY COMMUNITIES.
