It was the beginning of the year punk broke, to borrow an expression, and Neil Young hit the road with Sonic Youth and Social Distortion in support. Many nights presented a tough crowd for the opening bands, as most audience members weren't ready to embrace alternative/punk music. In fact, I'm pretty sure Social Distortion didn't stay on the tour nearly as long as Sonic Youth. Here's a link for an idea of what it was like for the bands:

This recording is a nice representation of Sonic Youth's sets during the tour. Although the venue size somewhat impacts the recording quality, the sound is otherwise clear. I think the equipment used was a Sony WM-D6, but I no longer have all my old trading correspondences for confirmation. A huge thanks to the taper for this and many other excellent tapes all those years ago!
