1991-02-13 Aud #1

Well, I'm finally getting around to digitizing my 700+ cassettes (at my wife's insistence--she wants them out of the house), so I'm going to start posting some goodies here. I taped many a show in the Toronto area from the late '80's to the late '90's, and also recorded a lot of radio broadcasts, mostly from CFNY, 102.1 in Toronto. Hope you stumble across something you like, or even a show you were at!

addendum: I have had many comments about the fate of my tapes, so for those worried about them...the masters I am boxing up and storing in my parents' basement. The others (mixed tapes, recorded LP's, etc) are getting tossed. My wife is not evil or insensitive--we live in a small place, and the many boxes were getting in the way. This is something I'VE wanted to do for awhile, as well. She just gave me the push. Oh, and she doesn't have shelves of makeup, or hundreds of shoes, no matter what stereotypes you care to buy in to. Her comic collection, however....

Sonic Youth--Copps Coliseum, Hamilton, Ontario Feb. 13, 1991

Not my recording, but I was at the show. First of 2 back-to-back shows I saw of SY opening for Neil Young. For this one I was front row, but over to the side, right in front of the stacks--it was very loud there! If I had been recording, I think my mike would have exploded. At one point in Neil's set, they lowered a keyboard from the ceiling. When Neil played it, my pant legs started flapping!

Sonic Youth were certainly an interesting opening act for Neil. He was obviously in his noisy phase at the time (the Arc/Weld days), so he got it, but a lot of his audience were mystified. Quite a few folks left and hung out in the lobby. There was one guy behind me who stared at the stage the entire time, mouth hanging open, with a look of disbelief on his face. I kept checking on him, it was quite hilarious to see! At least the crowd didn't seem openly hostile, like the next night in Toronto. I will post that right after this!
