We were just poor folks and we farmed. I helped work in the fields some and we grew cotton and feed stuffs. I was born and raised right on the Colorado river. When I was a grown girl, they got to talking about putting dams on the river. During World War II my mother got sick and died and that left me at home by myself. Well it was way out in the country. You've probably heard of Lakeside Heights near Kingsland--that was my homeplace. Well, I got out and worked. I had always liked kitchen work, so I worked at cafes a lot. Then I saved my money and bought this little home up here. but I was by myself and when I had to have surgery on my eyes and ended up here since I couldn't see well enough to take care of myself. When we grew grew all that stuff in the country we used most of it ourselves. Especially the feed crops. The cotton was sold to a buyer at Kingsland, and there was a gin there, too. My daddy and brothers would take the cotton to Kingsland, but I was too young to go. That was about 1910. I went to school at Kingsland, and we had an end-of-school program with all the kids in plays and such. My mother was Florence Boone, from East Texas. Her family moved to Llano, just travelling. My father was George Weeks, and he met my mother when he worked for the family. My grandpa Boone hired people to pick cotton and my daddy was hired for that. We were just old farm people who ate cornbread and beans! We had our own vegetables, chickens, milk and everything.
