He continues with stories of his youth, meeting his wife and finally moving to Burnet, where he drove the US mail in a buggy forty miles to a Post Office kept by Dan Moore. He also tells of an incident that happened while he was sheriff. "While I was sheriff at Burnett, Charlie Bowlin robbed the Post Office in Williamson County. He killed the Postmaster, and only got twenty dollars. In making his getaway, he dropped a twenty dollar bill, so he didn't make a thing. He went to his brother's and Os Garrett and I were sent to Brownwood, Texas, after him. When we got there and found out our business, the Sheriff got a hunch that some of his friends were going to take him away from us at Brushey Creek, about 7 miles out. That evening we all gathered at Happy Jack's Saloon, and when we left, he slipped two bottles of whiskey in the double-seated surrey. We took Charley out at midnight, and the Sheriff sent 7 men with us until after we passed Brushey Creek. Os was pretty drunk and was driving. He got smart and emptied his gun at trees and other things along the road. Our prisoner had a thumb that had perished away, that made it possible for him to slip off the handcuffs, which he did when he saw that Os's gun was empty and started to hit him over the head with the them. I grabbed his arm, and then we had a tussle, but I won." More to this story. Other names mentioned: Mr. Whooten, Dan Ricks, James R. Moss, E. D.
