Ministries

Children and youth

We welcome children and young people to participate in our Sunday services, and there is a regular all-age service at St Luke's. At the 10:30am service we have a children's craft activity related to the theme of the day, and young people contribute to the 10:30am service with music as well as being a liturgist/ reader/ slideshow operator. Young people are also involved in other aspects of the life of the church, helping as leaders with kidsclub and youth group, participating in working bees, and having a leadership role on vestry.

We hold a fortnightly after-school kids' club at St Luke's Hall on Fridays during term time. More info here.

Intermediate and high school students are welcome to join our youth group which meets every second Saturday evening 7-8:30pm in the parish hall (3 Wharfe St) for games, discussion, and dessert. More info here.

Cursillo

Cursillo is a local discipleship movement within the Anglican Church which seeks to support and encourage people's relationship with Jesus. A group from the parish meet monthly for this purpose.

We believe it is important for people to meet together and study the Bible together, pray together, and share each other's lives.

There are two AAW (Association of Anglican Women) groups which meet monthly:

  • St Luke's group meet on a Wednesday evening

  • St Andrew's group meet on a Monday afternoon

Music group

A music group made up of youth and adults (guitars, ukuleles, clarinet & drum) plays fortnightly on Sundays at 10:30 at St Luke's; new members are very welcome.

Choir

A choir sings every Sunday at 10:30 at St Luke's; new members are very welcome.

Visiting

We have a team who help with visiting and pastoral care.

Rosters

We have people helping in a variety of ways:

  • Services - leading intercessions, leading liturgy, reading scripture, welcoming people, serving morning tea, and operating the slideshow for the service

  • Flower, linen, and brass-cleaning rosters

  • Gardening and maintenance

Missions

The Missions Committee meets monthly to encourage the parish to support missions. We actively support the work of CMS and AMB.

Rest home services

A small team holds a service at Harbour View on the 1st Tuesday each month at 11am; at Northanjer on the 3rd Wednesday at 1:30pm; and are on a roster for services at the Observatory Village.

North Otago Anglican homes for the aged

The rental of 19 one-bedroom cottages on two sites is overseen by a trust that provides affordable rental accomodation for older Anglicans and other elderly in Oamaru.

Anglican Family Care

We support Anglican Family Care North Otago in their work with Oceans (a grief and loss program for children) and Family Start (home visiting support for parents of under-fives). More info on these programmes can be found here.

Foodbank

On the first Sunday of the month we collect donations of food for the Combined Churches Foodbank; some parishioners volunteer at the Foodbank.

Steeple people

Prior to lockdown, a group of volunteers kept St Luke's open to visitors and tourists Monday to Saturday from 10:30am to 3:30pm, from October to April. People were rostered every 3 weeks for 2.5 hours.

Meals on Wheels

The parish is rostered for two months a year. Please let Beryl (ph 434 2018) know if you can help.
