Whis wakes Beerus, the God of Destruction  from his long slumber and tells him that Freeza was defeated by a Saiyan. Whis continues showing scenes of Goku's past, until Beerus interrupts him and tells him he has seen enough. 39 years ago, the Oracle Fish foretold that a mighty opponent would appear before Beerus. The Oracle Fish does not remember it, but Beerus is convinced that it said so. Since he heard rumors that a Saiyan defeated Freeza, Beerus tracks down this warrior, Goku. On Kaio-sama's planet with his ally, the mysterious Whis  Beerus proceeds to challenge Goku. Ecstatic over the new challenge, Goku does not heed Kaio-sama s advice and battles Beerus  but he is overwhelmed and defeated. Beerus then departs in order to seek out more powerful adversaries on Earth.

Meanwhile, at Capsule Corporation, Bulma's birthday party is being held and the Z Fighters are enjoying leisure activities. Piccolo sings karaoke, a drunk Gohan appears as Great Saiyaman, the Pilaf Gang appears and they have been turned into children because they gathered all the Dragon Balls themselves and wished for youth but Shenron made them a little too young before the events of the film, a motorcycle policewoman comes to Capsule Corporation at one point during the party, and a game of bingo is held with a pretty girl unveiling the prices. The Pilaf Gang sneak into the party in order to steal the Dragon Balls, but Bulma does not recognize them and invites them to the party as a result. Pilaf remembers when Oozaru Goku destroyed his castle when he sees Goten's hair is similar to that of Goku. The drunken Gohan asks Mai to shoot him and he snaps all the bullets with one finger, but one of them hits Videl's leg and another one hits Beerus orehead. While healing her, Dende notices that Videl is pregnant. Videl has been hiding the fact to surprise Gohan later, and Dende does not reveal it to the others yet. The God of Destruction's arrival erupts the party, and it appears that Vegeta already knows Beerus  Vegeta musters all of his excitement and casts aside his pride to put the party's unannounced attendee in a good mood. However, when Beerus asks Mr. Buu for one or two of the custard puddings he has, Mr. Buu eats all of them, eventually pissing off the God of Destruction, who decides to destroy the Earth. Jinzoningen #18, Tenshinhan, Piccolo, Gotenks, Gohan, Mr. Buu, and Vegeta attempt to fight him and the God of Destruction easily defeats them one after another. Meanwhile, Whis enjoys sushi in a restaurant near Capsule Corporation, not even bothering to watch the battles unfold. When the God of Destruction slaps Bulma, it angers Vegeta and gives him enough power to resist Beerus. Goku even says that Vegeta's power has surpassed his own.

Goku decides to use the Dragon Balls and ask Shenlong how to reach the Super Saiyan God. He and his friends summon Shenlong, and the dragon says that a Super Saiyan God once appeared on Planet Vegeta to stop bad Saiyans, but he failed because of the form's time limit. He also reveals that they need the power of six pure-hearted Saiyans for one of them to reach the Super Saiyan God form. After this failed first attempt at creating Super Saiyan God, Vegeta's younger brother, Tarble is mentioned when Goku and his friends realize that they need a sixth Saiyan, but they do not know how to contact him in a devastating matter.Goku confronts Beerus again and they wage an intense battle in space, right above planet Earth. During the titanic battle, Goku transforms into a  a form beyond even Super Saiyan 3 - Super Saiyan God, thanks to the power of himself, Vegeta, Gohan, Trunks, Goten, and Pan (via Videl, as she was not born yet), fulfilling the prophecy once stated by the Oracle Fish. The form gives Goku the power to resist Beerus but he reverts back to his regular Super Saiyan form due to the form's time limit. However, he learns the form's godlike feeling, which allows him to use Super Saiyan God's power against Beerus.

The two seem to be equally strong at some point, but Beerus eventually wins when he uses his God of Destruction Super Energy Sphere. Goku stops Beerus  energy sphere, barely holding it back, and the screen suddenly blacks out. Chi-Chi and Goku's friends appear in Goku's mind, then he absorbs the energy ball. Goku gets exhausted, and Beerus wants Goku to say "I give up" and he says so. Beerus says that the Super Saiyan God was not that strong and the Oracle Fish's prediction was a little exaggerated. Beerus reveals that Whis is his martial arts master and stronger than him. He also says that there are twelve universes and the one Goku and his friends know is just one of them, the Seventh Universe. Beerus is the God of Destruction of the Seventh Universe, with each universe having its own God of Destruction. After returning to the temple, Whis knocks Beerus out and remarks that Beerus will wake up again in three years. Before returning to sleep, Beerus was informed by Whis to brush his teeth.

While Bulma's party continued, Vegeta says that he will be Super Saiyan God next time. When Goku reveals that he was on Earth watching the battles, he says that Vegeta became an incredible Super Saiyan back when Beerus slapped Bulma and even jokes that they should just have their enemy hit Bulma the next time they are up against some nasty opponent, only for Bulma to slap Goku. Everyone wasn't impressed so they were angry at at Goku for not helping out then. Oolong, upon hearing this, jumps on Goku yelling at him about their lives being in such grave danger. Goku says he wanted to scout out Beerus to try and form a strategy, but ultimately it did not help at all. Vegata tells Bulma to slap him again, which she agrees to do with pleasure as Goku starts crawling away as Bulma winds up...

CANONCITY CLARIFICATION: Canon

Placed between chapters 517 and 518 of the manga, the events of Battle of Gods take place several years after the titanic battle with Chibi Buu, which determined the fate of the entire universe as is the "lost decade".
