This is also a guide to assist people that wish to visit this part of the world - So, welcome to the countries of South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Botswana the countries that make up this beautiful region of Africa. We are just beginning to realise our enormous potential as a tourist destination. The first thing that one should realise are that the national parks are among the greatest in the world and there are few better places to see Africa’s wildlife. The thrill of seeing the big six - animals like elephants and lions and whales in their wild surrounds should not be underestimated.

South African beaches are great - they are amongst the best and least crowded in the world, and the surf is the best you can get. The East coast is warm (Mocambique Current) and the west coast refreshing (Benguela Current) . The countryside and particularly the mountains, are spectacular, and the mountain biking, walking and 4X4 bundu bashing and touring possibilities are virtually endless.

The climate is more than kind, and there is the added advantage that it is summer in southern Africa while the northern hemisphere is in the throes of winter. So you can come from minus 20 to plus 20 within 12 hours!

The region’s infrastructure, by any standards, is extremely good in Southern Africa — the transport and communications systems all work - the hotels and the restaurants are sophisticated, and wherever you are, you can find somewhere clean and comfortable to stay, and with decent food.

The mix of cultures is awsome and interesting - the various black regions , white, colored, Indian.... Since South Africa’s peaceful transition to democracy in 1994, that country has melded into a new society of great energy and significance. Political violence is a thing of the past and among the vast majority of the people there is a desire to get on with building a new nation - albeit diverse and not necessarily united. As the motto says : "Strength in Diversity"

It’s now an exciting time to visit.

With regards to South Africa's neighbours the following could be said: Swaziland, in contrast to South Africa’s new democracy, retains its beloved(?) monarchy and the tiny country is proof that a pre-industrial culture can thrive in a modern nation.

Lesotho, ‘the kingdom in the sky’, offers travellers contact with traditional and rural African village life, whether pony trekking or hiking through the highland wilderness.

Enjoy
