The visit to the Singapore Youth Flying Club (SYFC) was enlightening and truly an eye-opener.

Col. Andy Tan, General Manager of SYFC brought us through the evolution of SYFC, basic aviation knowledge, journey to obtain a Private Pilot Licence (PPL) and career as a pilot. We found out an interesting fact - one can obtain a PPL at 16 and a half years old, much earlier than the legal age to obtain a driving licence!

Next, we had a go at the computer Flying Simulator game. The boys had a fun time experiencing flying with different types of jets.

We also had the opportunity to view the actual training place for the pilots i.e. flying in a simulated environment. As there was a training ongoing, we get to see the instructor and the trainee in action. With a complicated control system and various external factors to look out for, the training was an intense moment.

Besides the flying courses, SYFC also conducts aero modelling classes. Students were even selected to participate in overseas competitions. When we were shown a room full of “planes” built by the enthusiasts, we were awestruck by the display.

Finally we were given a tour at the hangar where we took multiple photos with the Diamond DA40 aircraft. Some of us even had the chance to sit at the controls and be the ‘pilot’ at that instant.

We ended the tour with some refreshments and snacks provided by SYFC and of course, a great group photo to top it off!

An inspiring welcome from SYFC...
