Abstract

Children have a basic knowledge of insects that they see during their everyday life out of school such as in their garden, round the house, walking around the block where they live or in the yard on school gardens or orchard. We sought to establish the level of knowledge amongst schools aged pupils. We have to understand the knowledge of mosquitoes and butterflies related to humans because mosquitoes are important vectors for Dengue fever in Brazil. A total of 361 children aged 3 to 16 years old enrolled in two southern Brazilian urban and rural public schools were invited to participate in this exploratory study. A5 point Likert scale questionnaire was developed. The scale categories varied from strongly disagree to strongly agree as contents of the questions. The scale consisted of 22 biological statements: 11 for the mosquitoes and 11 for the butterfly. The questions were designed to explore what attitudes and knowledge about butterflies and mosquitoes.

Proficient photo catalytic degradation of methylene blue and methyl orange dyes as organic pollutant from aqueous medium.

Abstract

Because of the distinctive and fascinating properties of metal nanoparticles, their synthesis and applications in variety of fields have augmented a great devotion. In this research, facile approaches have been adopted for the synthesis of nanoparticles to be used as photocatalyst to decompose organic hazardous pollutants. Nanoparticles of Ag and ZnO are synthesized by wet chemical reduction of salt and direct precipitation method respectively. Synthesis of the nanoparticles has been characterized by UV-Visible and FTIR spectroscopy. Functionality of the prepared nanoparticles is studied by photo catalytic oxidation, decomposition, of organic pollutants, methylene blue and methyl orange by using UV-Visible spectrophotometer. Comparison of catalytic activity of metal nanoparticles on oxidation of dyes revealed that Ag nanocatalysts are more effective in photo catalytic oxidation of both dyes.

The Changing Trends of Climate in Context to Indian Sundarbans.

Abstract

The effects of climate change on estuarine system is reflected through the changing salinity level of the coastal and estuarine waters, the concentration of dissolved oxygen in water, the levels of pollution and turbidity due to increased rate of erosion etc. In order to get a holistic picture of the climate change we had collected data from two different sectors of Indian Sundarbans (namely western and central sectors) on surface water temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen for three decades (1980-2009). Our investigation reflects the rising trend of surface water temperatures in both the sectors reflecting the alarming trend of global warming in this part of the Indian sub-continent at the apex of Bay of Bengal. The scenario of salinity profile is conceptualized in two different ways due to variation in geographical features. The ex situ effect of Himalayan deglaciation is confirmed not only by decreasing trend of salinity in the western sector, but also through gradual increase of dissolved oxygen.
