Fall 2014 STY: Kathryn Garvey

Kathryn Garvey’s art education supervising professor, Harry Posnanski Jr., describes Kathryn as “exceptionally organized, very talented, and one of the most outstanding students that I have had the pleasure to supervise in the last 13 years. Kathryn has a broad understanding of the field of art and has demonstrated a veteran teachers’ understanding of the classroom. Kathryn teachers her classes with an enthusiasm that is contagious, and the students eagerly participate in her lessons.”

In her application, Kathryn wrote, “Student teaching is a wonderful experience where I am able to test my skills and find out how to become a great teacher who students will remember. From classroom management, to professional development, student teaching covers all of the basics to transition quickly from a pre-service teacher into a certified professional.”

Spring 2015 STY: John Brush

John P. Brush, a nine year U. S. Marine combat veteran, is finally fulfilling his childhood dream of becoming a teacher. During John’s time in The Marine Corps, he served as an instructor in several different training areas. In his application, John wrote, “This experience helped my love for teaching grow.” And, while student teaching, as John taught every day, “my love for teaching and desire to have a positive impact on the students grew and grew.”

Supervising professor in the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Movement Science, Gail Weintraub, describes John, “as an extraordinary student whose insight and concern for others, spirit, and intellect have left an indelible mark on his peers and professors. He is eager to take charge in helping young people learn to take full advantage of their physical capabilities and to make the best of their opportunities for health and fitness.” John’s cooperating teachers noted, “John was a great role model to the students and developed outstanding relationships with both students and faculty. He used an array of resources and promoted the development of critical thinking and problem solving. John is a professional and a true leader
