 Soloman Snider, son of Philip and Sarah Hearn Snider, was born 12 June 1835. He served as a private in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Records show he enlisted in Wake Co., on 12 September 1862. He was present and accounted for through June 1864 and was paroled at Greensboro on 8 May 1865. On 23 February 1860, at age 24, he married Mary Ann Garner, b. 4 June 1839, daughter of John Garner and Sabrina Wood Garner. Soloman was actually Mary Ann's second cousin, once removed. Marriages of distant relatives in early Davidson County was not uncommon due to small numbers of residents. Soloman was known for his long white beard.

Soloman and Mary Ann lived near Denton and attended Tom's Creek Primitive Baptist Church. They had nine children, 2 sons and 7 daughters. The children included a set of twins, Sarah Elizabeth and Sabrina Jane born on 12 June 1868. Soloman and his oldest son, John Wesley Snider, started the Snider Lumber

Company near a railroad siding about two miles north of Denton, at a place that eventually took the Snider name. The little village also had a post office and general store. Later, John Wesley Snider set up a lumber plant, also called Snider Lumber Company, about three miles west of Snider. This operation included a sawmill, planer mill and dry kiln as it took timber from stump and finished it ready for building use.

Soloman Snider died 14 June 1918. He left all of his children $ 200.00 in his will. One of his children, Amanda Etta Snider Gallimore, preceded him in death, and he left her share to her daughter, Viola. Flora Mariah Snider, an aunt, raised Viola.

Mary Ann Garner Snider died 6 September 1910. Both Soloman and Mary Ann are buried at Tom's Creek Primitive Baptist Church.

Philip Hosea Lee Snider, the son of Soloman and Mary Ann Garner Snider, was

born 12 February 1872. Lee, as he was known, grew up on his father's farm and attended

a one-room school at Poplar College.

On 1 May 1898 Lee Snider married Mary Ann Skeen. Mary Ann Skeen Snider

was born on 26 September 1878 and the daughter of Hosea McNeal and Elizabeth

Metters Skeen of Denton.

Lee and Mary Ann worked hard on their farm near Denton. They were self-

sufficientand had all kinds of fruit, winter and summer,since they had built a special

room to store the fruit. Vegetables were grown and canned,hogs raised,cows milked for

milk and butter,and sheepwere raisedfor the wool. The sheep were sheared once a year

and the wool was sold. When the sheep were killed for food, the hides would be sent

away to be tanned. The young children would lay on these hides to take their naps in the

summertime. Lee, who enjoyed trading, was able to barter for many of the things his

family needed. He would use his money to buy the few essentials that they could not

barter or produce on the farm.

The milk and butter was put in the "spring run" to keep it cool since there were no

refrigerators. Kerosene lamps were used for lighting in the years before Lee installed a

Delco lighting system.

The house was heated by three fireplaces-one in the kitchen, sitting room and

the "parlor". This meant that each son helped cut and splitfirewood.

Lee, Mary Ann, and their ten children worked hard but they found time to have

fun also. Corn shuckings would be held at each home in the neighborhood until

everyone's corn had been shucked. Along with the socializing came good food. After

Lee and Mary Ann Snider got a refrigerator the high light of family get togethers on

Sunday visits would be Mary Ann making home made ice cream.

Mary Ann Snider was a small woman who had beautiful white hair. Her hair

started turning white at the age of 13 so that by the time she was an adult her hair was a

very identifiable feature. She must have been a very loving and protective grandmother

since most of her grandchildren remember having good times while staying with her.

Mary Ann and Lee, like Lee's grandfather and namesake, Philip chose to become

members of Tom' s Creek Primitive Baptist Church.

Mary Ann Skeen Snider died 16 March 1944 and was buried in Tom's Creek

Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.

Lee Snider married again on 15 July 1946 to Lundy Cameron Carrick, b. 1875,

died 27 January 1967. She was the daughter of James Monroe Cameron and Barbara

Davis.

Lee Snider died on 8 October 1951 and is also buried in the Tom's Creek

Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
